Smoothies in the morning are my fave thing these days.  Here are a couple of my current favorite smoothie recipes:

* I don’t measure anything, who needs perfection?
Fruit Smoothie:

  • A handful of frozen mangos (Trader Joe’s frozen section)
  • 2 spoonfuls of greek yogurt (full fat keeps you full longer, also from Trader Joe’s)
  • One scoop soy protein powder (Trader Joe’s)
  • Maple syrup to taste (just enough to sweeten it a bit)
  • Almond milk (you can use regular cow’s milk or cream or whatever you like.)

Put the mangos in the bottom of the blender and add items in the order listed.  Blend on low and continue to blend until the entire mix is thoroughly blended.

Veggie smoothie:

  • 2 handfuls of kale
  • 1 banana (I will freeze the bananas so that I don’t have to add as much ice)
  • 2 heaping spoonfuls of Greek yogurt (Trader Joe’s)
  • One scoop soy protein powder (Trader Joe’s)
  • 1 spoonful flax seed
  • Almond milk
  • Maple syrup to taste

Add them to the blender, blend on low until mixture blends smoothly.

    Some input on powder protein: whey or hemp protein is more bioactive than soy, which can cause bloating and tummy troubles for many ppl. If you’re lactose intolerant go for whey protein isolate rather than “complete” whey protein, which contains concentrate and isolate. But be aware of this, besides “protein” whey concentrate delivers a critical nutrient you won’t find in soy protein powders L-gluthione. Google it. It’s one of the most important immune builders you can add to your diet. One other thing, choose whey protein that is BST or rGBH-free, or free of biosynthetic hormones. Look for protein from grass-fed dairy cows. The reason this is important is that there is no regulation in the protein powder industry and so much of what is out there is crap. I buy organic whey protein concentrate. It seems expensive initially but amounts to about $1.75 a smoothie, which is worth it to me.

      Good to know, Jo. I have used whey protein powder in the past, which I purchased from a naturopath , but I don’t think they sell it at TJ’s which is where I usually buy my smoothie fixin’s. Where do you buy your whey protein powder?

    yum! i’ve been looking for more ways to add more kale to my life 😉 and i just bought a huge bag of flaxseed at costco (on a random whim) i never have really used much of it. adding to a smoothie will be perfect.
